Proper cigar storage is a critical aspect of cigars. Cigars will respond to the environment they're kept in. If the environment is moist, a cigar will absorb the moisture. If the environment is dry, the cigar will dry out over time. The term for this is 'hygroscopic'. A cigar will dry out or absorb moisture until it's own moisture content equalizes with the climate around it.
A cigar humidor is a box that is manufactured specifically for the purpose of storing cigars. Humidors vary greatly in price. The price of the humidor will reflect the quality of workmanship, the style and the size. Some humidors can store hundreds of cigars and provide dividers and trays for easy organisation and access.
A humidor allows for cigar storage in a very controlled environment. It allows for the maintenance of peak, stable relative humidity levels, keeping the cigars at the desired 12-14% of total weight in moisture. Relative humidity refers to the amount of moisture in the surroundings compared with total saturation, independent of temperature. For this reason, relative humidity of 70% for example will not depend on temperature.
Size, shape, colour and style of humidor do not impact a humidor's effectiveness. A humidor should not only do the job it is designed to do, but should also suit the style and taste of it's owner.
A good humidor can be expensive. These can range in price from a around fifty pounds to several hundred pounds. Buying a good quality humidors not only enables you to control the humidor effectively, but also avoids the frustration that trying to control a poor quality humidor can bring. Those living in a climate continually maintaining a relative humidity around 70% may not have as big of a need for a humidor as those living in variable climates, where temperature changes will affect their cigar storage.
